Vagina... yep, I just said that.

Vagina.

Vagina.

Vagina.

Feeling uncomfortable yet? Seriously though, why is that word so taboo? It's not like I used the "p" word or the awful "c" word. I said vagina. That's politically correct, I think.

Maybe you're not used to talking about your vagina, and if that's you, just x out now.
Because we're about to talk about vaginas. I have one. Cool, right? I've had it my whole life and yet I feel like there is so much I don't know about it. Why does it have to so mysterious?! I'm guessing because in America it is just so inappopriate to discuss anything related to intercourse.. i.e. the penis and vagina, since they go hand in hand in the act. Though various other provocative things are not inappropriate? Yes, I think it's backwards.

Seriously though, I had a procedure done today to take biopsies of my vagina and cervix and there was a young corpsman present along with the doctor. This corpsman was so awkward the entire time. He couldn't look at me, probably for fear of seeing a vagina.. but his tone of voice when he had to actually use the word and talk about it was slightly uncomfortable... and that's his profession!!

Maybe I'm just overly under-modest  but I do not get it.

and that's my rant.

  1. Hahahahahaha. This post cracks me up. I used to be uncomfortable with speaking about anything involving my female anatomy... and then I had a baby. :) I still didn't want my husband down there near my vagina as our baby was born... so he stayed at my head the whole time. Then when our second was born, he delivered her on the side of the road, so he saw it all. Now there really is no hiding anything ;) I highly recommend the book "Taking Charge Of Your Fertility" for ALL women -- we should all know and understand our vagina, uterus, ovaries, and how the whole dang system works... but that's a soapbox for another time ;)

    1. Yep, childbirth pretty much stripped me of all modesty! But you had your baby on the side of the road?!! Holy Moly!!! I'm impressed. I'll have to check that book out! Thanks

    2. Hahaha -- yup, side of the road... 1 1/2 hour labor ;)... that birth story is actually going to be featured in a guest post at Brittany's blog www.mylifeasasailorsprincess.blogspot.com in a few weeks. It was pretty insane!

      And that book is stellar!

  2. I've always been super open about EVERYTHING intercourse related, so I hate that society has such a negative perception of anything slightly sexual!

  4. Were you there for a colposcopy? I hate those. I made my husband come with me to an appointment at the women's clinic to learn and talk to the doctor. He was SO uncomfortable the whole time and it was just a sit down appointment! I told him he better get used to it because when I get pregnant I plan on him being very involved and informed.

  5. I loved this post! I feel like all my modesty went out the window when I had my son. I was in labor so long and outlasted so many doctors and nurses afterwards my husband and I actually had to sit down and play the "so how many people had there hands in my vagina" game ;)

  6. HA! I love this post!! We moved to North Carolina this summer, and before I could get an intake appointment with a family doctor, I started experiencing some crazy symptoms & (after I googled them & was convinced I had cancer) took myself to the urgent care. The doctor REALLY told me he didn't feel comfortable giving me a pap exam? I couldn't believe it. Grow up, guys. I think, as you said, "V" rolls off the tongue much more gracefully than the "C" or "P" synonyms.

  9. I feel like it's even more awkward for men in that profession because they have to be extra careful to make sure they don't come across as a total creep. I'm totally fine with the words penis and vagina, so much so that occasionally I say them in public places like the grocery store (as part of a normal conversation of course) and then wonder why people near me look at me strangely.
