Getting back to Healthy

I think every new momma has one of the same goals: to lose the baby weight! I'm no different, that is certainly on the top of my to-do list. Thankfully I only gained 20 lbs during this pregnancy (and almost 10 of it was all baby!!) but I would like to lose the the baby weight and then some considering I never lost all of the baby weight the first time.

I've always been active, so getting back into the groove of working out will not be the problem. I've already started walking and pre-planning all the awesome workouts I want to try once the doctor says "go for it" at my 6-week checkup. My husband recently became a certified crossfit instructor, so once I do get the okay, I'm going to test those waters... I think I'm really going to need my weekly yoga class to recover from those workouts.. they can be pretty intense. That's good though right?

Anyway, here's the real problem. My eating. I love food, and I really love junk food. As much as I try to eat healthy, I can never deny a cupcake or piece of candy. It's awful, I know. And I know some pretty good bakers, plus I love to bake myself, making things twice as hard.

But, I am on a mission!

I will eat healthy!
...99% of the time. Hey a girl's gotta cheat once in a while, right?

I will stick to my workouts.

I will feel good about myself.

Doing all of the above will make me a better mother/wife/person.

Here are some of my healthy eats this week!! All delicious and super easy to make!

People have been bringing us dinner all week to welcome Baby Ronin and this was a great way to use the leftover chicken from dinner the night before!

These make for such a good snack, only 130 calories in four bites!
I liked them better when they were cold.

I'd love to swap some healthy recipes!
What are some of your faves?

Zukeran Egg shop and Mini Zoo

Okay, So I'm not even sure this qualifies as a "mini zoo," but we'll go with that. Keegan and I headed to the Zukeran egg shop and mini zoo this week with our playgroup friends. It's small and pretty much a hole in the wall with animals, but the kids loved it and they burned quite a bit of energy running around to see everything.

If you're in Okinawa, the egg shop is located on the 16, just off the 329.

Here are some of the animals held here...

...I'm pretty sure none of them should be living in sub-tropical Japan.

Yes, that is a Kangaroo..

This sign was posted outside of a monkey cage, I'm pretty sure he bites!

The Japanese are famous for the way they just throw things together. This is the playground, which has obviously suffered a few typhoons, though is surprisingly still standing. The kids happened to find it, as much as we tried to stay out of sight, we didn't let them play here very long.

And here's the real reason anyone should ever go to this place...

No, no I was not talking about the eggs.. those.. down there!

CREAM PUFFS!

They are seriously so delicious and only 150 yen!!! Plus they box them up nice and pretty and send them home with an ice pack. I love all the little touches the Japanese add, it always makes my day.

Okay so I also bought some eggs. I had to try them, fresh and local!
And they were only 320 yen for the bucket!

Keegan scored some custard/pudding/flan type dish. Also delish!

It was a fun day, I'm really loving all the group adventures we've been going on lately!

Twitter?

Okay, okay.. so I know I'm a little late to the game but I just got a twitter account about a month ago.

I set it up mainly to expand my reach for this blog and I have to admit.. I don't know how to use it! I mean I know how to post a tweet and I guess tag someone using the @.. but what's with all the #hashtags and whatnot. What do they mean??! How and what the heck do I use them for?

Someone please help a sister out and give me the 411 on Twitter!

Follow me!

I promise I'll get better at it =)

When Breast isn't Best...

Can you believe Ronin is a week old already? I know I can't!

Bringing home a second baby was much easier than bringing home the first. We are pros at this point, aren't we? And so many of our questions were already answered. Where will the baby sleep at first? When will he move to the crib? Are we giving him a binky? We learned through trial and error with Keegan and so by now we already had so much of this parenting thing figured out and perfected to what fits best for us.

Now, what is the baby going to eat. Breast milk or formula? Naturally I want what is best for my child, I mean really, what mother doesn't?  And I know that there are many proven benefits of breastfeeding.

-Breast milk is rich in nutrients and antibodies to help build his little immune system.

-Breast feeding can help reduce the risk of disease for both mom and baby.

-Breast feeding burns calories, meaning I lose the baby weight faster.

-It's free!

-Breast feeding will build a strong bond between mother and child. *

That all sounds great, why wouldn't I do it? I'm not by the way... See that little star up there, the one that usually means there is some fine print somewhere? Yes, I disagree with the last one, mostly because it isn't always true.

-Rewind about two years!-

As I said earlier, I want what is best for my children and breastfeeding seemed to be the obvious choice when Keegan arrived. As soon as he was born we started breastfeeding. It hurt at first but the doctors and nurses let me know that my nipples would be sore for the first few days, they just needed to get used to it. They also gave me Lansinoh cream to help with any cracking. I trusted them and left it at that, surely in a few days it would get better. The lactation consultant visited me before I left the hospital and despite the pain of feedings, she ensured me that Keegan was latching well and the pain would go away once my nipples had adjusted, just keep using the cream is what she assured me!

I went home and continued to breastfeed. Days turned to weeks and it continued to be painful every time I fed K. I used the cream and even tried pumping to relieve the pain and give my boobs a break.. but even that hurt. It became so dreadful that I would put off K's feeding for as long as I could and sometime I would even cut him short. Breastfeeding Keegan brought me to tears nearly every time after the first week or so.

My husband suggested we switch to formula, but I refused. Because what kind of mother would I be if I didn't give my baby the best? I felt as if I wasn't a good enough mother because of what I could not provide. I should be able to breast feed. But I couldn't. It broke me. I couldn't even look at my child when he was eating because I was so hurt and frustrated that he was hurting me. It wasn't his fault, but I couldn't even look at him... what kind of bonding is that?

After eight painful weeks, (yes I am that stubborn and held on for that long!) I gave up on breastfeeding. It was a matter of deciding what really is best for my child. If I cannot look at him, bond, with him, and give him all of my love all the time, then surely that can't be best. It took me eight whole weeks to come to that conclusion. We switched to formula, and Keegan and I have a stronger bond than anything I've ever known. I'm convinced that the outcome would be much different if I had held on to breastfeeding.

Even though Keegan and I began to grow a stronger bond, I still beat myself up over not breastfeeding. It was hard not to notice the glares from other mothers as I pulled out the formula in public, or the rude questions from friends and even strangers. It was frustrating when doctors and nurses would constantly remind me at check-ups that breastfeeding really was better. As if I had no important reason for making the switch... they never asked. All of the glares, questions and reminders only made me feel worse. Like I didn't do my very best.

My breastfeeding experience with Keegan was truly traumatizing and as Ronin's birth became fast approaching, what to feed him was one of the last questions I left to answer. Though I had an awful experience breastfeeding K, I still wanted what was best for Ronin. I promised myself that I would try. I wouldn't let myself suffer or sacrifice those precious bonding moments in the early weeks and I wouldn't be influenced by harsh words at the mouth of my doctor or nurse. I would try, because that's the very best I can do.

I breastfed Ronin for the first 3 days, just enough to get the colostrum! It was painful but I still tried, my goal was to make it to a week. After a morning feeding, I looked down to find an entire layer of blood filled skin dangling from my nipple... that was it. I was done.

Yes, breastfeeding and breastmilk have many many undeniable benefits, but none of them outweigh the relationship with my child. Ronin is one happy baby eating just fine. He does not go hungry and mommy stays happy too. And HAPPY IS HEALTHY!!

Ladies, don't knock yourself down too hard if you can't live up to your own expectations. Don't let anyone else's opinion lead you to believe that you are not doing something well enough. Motherhood is all about trial and error. What works for you and yours might not work for the next, but that's what is all about. You need to find what works for you and only YOU will know.

Good luck!

What have been some of your trial and errors?
Did you have any of your own expectations you didn't meet?
Tell me I'm not alone!

Katsuren Castle Ruins

I’m more than ashamed that I have lived on this little island for two years and have just visited my first castle ruin.  I could give a bunch of excuses like I had a newborn when we first got here, I didn’t know anyone and wouldn’t want to go alone, my husband has a crazy schedule, I started working the second year…I could go on and on, but they’re just excuses. The truth is it was just so easy to settle into the daily routine of things and a little bit scary to venture out into a world full of unfamiliar Kanji symbols and people that didn’t speak my language.
Don’t get me wrong, we’ve been to lots of neat places here, but mostly the touristy ones that have lots of English options like the Churaumi Aquarium. And that’s great, but Okinawa is full of so much history it really is shameful that I haven’t started getting around to see it all sooner.

Keegan and I started meeting up with a group of other moms and kiddos for a weekly play group and it’s been decided that we ought to visit all of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in Okinawa. There are a total of nine sites here that are collectively listed as “Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu.”
Last week we headed to Katsuren Castle Ruins, which was only about a 15 minute drive from where we live. The site is open 24 hours and has open access, though there is a visitor center located directly acrosse the street.

It probably doesn't strike you as the most kid friendly place, but honestly it was great for them to just be able to run around... K was knocked out no more than 2 minutes into the car ride home.  Plus it was free.. and you know I love free!!

There was quite a large hill and plenty of stairs, but I was 39 weeks pregnant and I did it with my two year old, so don't let that scare you... although it's likely that I was just trying to get my water to break.

The view was gorgeous! The ruins are located on a peninsula so you could view the Pacific on both sides.

You might not be able to tell, but there is a rather large hole next to this shrine. I wonder if they made sacrifices here...? hmm?

While we we're there they seemed to be excavating a portion of the ruins. I thought that was pretty neat. It seems crazy to me that there are still hidden treasures from the 15th century!

An here is some information about the castle in it's hay-day!

If you want to know even more, here are a few links that might help you out:

Keep an eye out for future posts on other sites we'll visit!

He's here!

He's finally here!

Meet Baby Ronin.

Born: Monday September 24, 2012

9 lbs 7 oz, 22 in long

I'm so excited my baby is finally here. I now have 2 crazy boys to look after and though I'll still be keeping up with the blog, it might not be as much as you or I would like.

Be patient with me as I transition from a mommy of one to a mommy of two!

Are we there yet? : 39 weeks

Seriously? Are we there yet?

I am the most impatient person in the world, and pregnancy recieves no special treatment! I am ready to be done with pregnancy and more importantly, welcome my new baby boy.
Today I am 39 weeks, officially. ONE MORE TO GO! And of course I'm hoping it is less.
I started my maternity leave from work earlier this week and am eagerly waiting.
With K I tried every gimmick I read about online to get him to come early.. except castor oil. There is no way you'll ever find me drinking that. I did eat three whole pineapples in one sitting though, and I'm pretty sure that worked...and it left my mouth raw and numb for a week.
I haven't tried so many this time around, but I've definately been walking and seducing my husband more than usual! I'm told those are the two best methods to get the baby out.. I obviousy haven't had any luck yet.
As impatient as I am, I cannot complain. This pregnancy (as well as my last one) has been easy. There were days where I honestly forgot I was pregnant until little guy would kick me square in the ribs.
Morning sickness was minimal and late night cravings never existed. Yes, yes... all that cake that I blamed on the baby... well, I just needed an excuse!
I've only gained 20 pounds and have suffered no swelling! I can still do the daily things I did before, and just yesterday I hiked up a castle ruin (post on that coming soon!).
I suppose I am lucky because pregnancy has not ruined my day to day nor has it made me overly uncomfortable.
I am just impatient. I want the excitement now. I want my baby, now.
And in two weeks you will find me saying that I miss this.
I will miss the baby rolling around in my belly.
Oh pregnancy, the things you do to me.
What about you? What was/is your pregnancy like?
Anyone as impatient as me?
Did you try to "self-induce" labor? How?

Linked-Up: Me, Myself and I

I'm still a little lost wandering around the blogging world.. who knew it could be so big and full of all things wonderful and crazy?

Every blog I visit I find "linky" posts or something to that extent. Just another way to network, but HOW COOL!

Anyway, here is my first linked-up post.

1. When you're feeling down, what do you do to pick yourself up?

Easy. I bake, because baking means eating something delicious! There was never a brownie or peice of cake that couldn't cheer me up.. I guess that's just the inner fat kid in me! =)

2. If you had to live in another time period, which would it be?

I love the 80's, the big hair, spandex and cutoff sweaters.. but I'm totally a hippie at heart.
I'm also a romance novel addict and I get so wrapped up in the one that take place centuries ago! I'd love to live by candelight and travel everywhere on foot or horseback, sometimes I think our lives are just too overcrowded. We miss so much by being bombarded with technology.

3. What is the most creative halloween costume you've ever worn?

I'm so proud of my toga!! This was a few years ago when I first got married and had no money!! I put the whole outfit together myself, using a sheet I already had and a few cheap accessories from Michael's. I think I spent less than $10.00 and it was CUTE!

4. FIVE Wierd things we wouldn't know about you without being told?

1. I am seriously scared of the dark, I still sleep with a night light!
2. I wash my dishes before putting them in the dishwasher.. my only germophobic habit.
3. Since I moved to Japan, I've developed a weird obsession for elephants... I'm not even sure why I love them so much.
4. I am self-concious about my height. Sometimes I make my husband measure ourselves against the wall and mark with a pencil just to make surehe's still a quarter inch taller than me =)
5. I have no wisdom teeth, lucky me! They just never came in.

5. What would you tell your 16-year-old self?

Everything is worth it, even if none of it makes sense.
Nothing is going to go as you planned, be okay with that.
Keep dreaming.. Channing Tatum still lives there =)
